Youth Truth Family Survey Results and BTSD’s Response

In the fall of 2019, Bristol Township School District families were surveyed about their experiences within the District in the following categories: engagement, relationships, culture, school safety, resources, and communication and feedback. BTSD partnered with the nonprofit Youth Truth to assist in the process.

Below is a chart of the positive feedback in the six main categories at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Please keep in mind that only 12% of BTSD families responded to the survey. We hope to have a higher participation this year for a larger representation of families in the data. BTSD evaluates the data and takes it into consideration when decision-making and setting future goals. The 2020 survey is available hereThank you in advance for your participation.

All of the ways BTSD is working to improve scores in each category ties back to one of the three main areas in our 2021-2024 Comprehensive Plan: The Whole Child, Student Growth and Achievement, and Parent and Community Engagement.

HOW BTSD IS IMPROVING…

Engagement

  • Elementary teachers are working on implementing a responsive classroom – an evidence-based approach to teaching and discipline that increases academic engagement, improves culture and relationships, and promotes a feeling of safety in the school and classroom. Middle school teachers at Armstrong have begun training and FDR teachers will be trained next school year.
  • Also at the elementary level, teachers began training for Project Lead the Way and Defined Learning to create engaging STEM activities and more hands-on learning for students. At the secondary level, instructional coaches continue to work with teachers to increase student engagement in classrooms.
  • To provide more opportunities for family engagement, BTSD partnered with Bucks County Family Services to offer virtual parenting workshops and family nights during COVID, and in-person family nights when COVID restrictions are lifted.

Relationships, Culture and School Safety

  • All building leaders are participating in year-long training and planning for mental health and optimal development, which will improve relationships between staff and students, build a more responsive culture and increase feelings of safety and security in schools.
  • At the elementary level, teachers are working on implementing the responsive classroom, mentioned in the above section.
  • At the secondary level, staff completed professional development in trauma-informed practices to improve relationships with students who have experienced trauma. Additionally, sixth grade students participate in character-building programs with the TKF Foundation – an educational organization dedicated to the goal of creating safer schools. Students learn about accountability, empathy, compassion, forgiveness and peacemaking for positive relationships among their peers.
  • At the high school level, staff recently began learning about and utilizing restorative practices that improve relationships.

Resources

  • To explore the allocation of resources to better serve students, BTSD has formed an Equity Leadership Team. In the 2020-2021 school year, the team, Board of Directors and District Administration will first receive professional development to build their lens of equity. Next, they will conduct an equity audit to benchmark data in the District and discover areas for change.

Communication and Feedback

  • BTSD implemented a Communication Plan to build strong and effective partnerships with families. Examples include expanding social media with the creation of a District Instagram and Twitter account, launching the monthly Tiger Talk podcast, more frequent communication with the Letters from the Superintendent’s Desk section of the website and distributing an annual report in 2021.
